Our History
Fifty Years and Growing . . .
Here's a fun look at what was going on at Superior Rail & Iron Works, Inc. and in the world since our founding in 1963. In looking back we noticed how often our growth coincided with championships for the Celtics and Bruins! We watched as music transformed from "I left my Heart in San Francisco" by Tony Bennett to Taylor Swift. We also watched as Superior Rail & Iron works expanded from a small residential railing company to the much larger commercial fabrication facility it has become today.

The company was founded in 1963 by Lenny Ferrara, Sr. in an old renovated mill building in Stoughton, Mass. At that time they were a residential fabricator of home ornamental railings.
Other events of 1963: The first artificial heart is implanted. The Celtics defeated the LA Lakers to win the NBA Championship. Julia Child debuts on educational television. Lawrence of Arabia wins Best Picture. Grammy Record of the Year was Tony Bennett "I left my Heart in San Francisco." President John Kennedy was assassinated.

The business grew and moved into a new building on Mill Street in Stoughton.
Other events of 1965: The first combat troops land in Vietnam. Watt riots occur in LA. The Celtics defeated the LA Lakers to win the NBA Championship. "The Sound of Music" premieres in theaters. Record of the year was Stan Getz's "The Girl from Ipanema."

In the early 1970’s as Lenny Ferrara, Jr. took the reins from his father, SRI expanded into the commercial market, supplying steel stairs, aluminum railings, ornamental railings and light structural steel to a number of local contractors.
Other events of 1970: 4 Students killed at Kent State University. The Bruins defeat St. Louis to win the Stanley Cup. The Beatles break-up. "Midnight Cowboy" wins best picture. Record of the year at the Grammy's was "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" by the 5th Dimension.

As SRI’s commercial market expanded to projects throughout the New England area, the company purchased 25+ acres on Route 106 in East Bridgewater, Mass and in 1986 erected a 27,000 square foot facility, which houses 21,000 square feet of fabrication and painting facilities as well as 6,000 square feet of office space. The additional acres are planned for future developments as the company continues to grow.
Other events of 1986: Space Shuttle Challenger explodes after launch. The Patriots lost to the Bears in the Super Bowl, the Red Sox lost to the Mets in the World Series, but the Celtics defeated Houston in the NBA Championship! The Oprah Winfrey Show hits national television. Song of the year at the Grammy's was "We are the World" by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.

Anthony J. Ferrara begins to manage the day to day operations of SRI and will eventually become the third generation owner.
Other events from 1998: President Clinton involved in White House Scandal with Monica Lewinsky. "Titanic" becomes highest grossing film of all time and wins the Oscar. Gene Autry, Sonny Bono and Frank Sinatra all pass away.
The Company saw a lot of growth as it moved into the new millenium. In 2005 a 6,000 sq. ft. addition was created for office space. By 2009, Superior Rail had grown enough to require the addition of 12,000 sq. ft. of shop and fabrication space. Then in 2013, they added 10,000 sq. ft. in storage units.
